Growth in Container and Cargo Handling at Omani Ports

Container and cargo handling in the ports of Oman witnessed substantial growth in the first half of 2025, marking an impressive increase of 11.7%. This surge underscores the dynamic nature of Oman’s maritime activities, with ship traffic also rising by 11.1% during this period.

Key Insights from Port Authorities

Muhanna bin Musa bin Baqer, the Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, highlighted that the expansion of port infrastructure has been instrumental in facilitating this increase. The ongoing improvements have improved logistical efficiency and enhanced the capability of the ports to meet the rising demand.

Container Handling Breakdown

During the first six months of 2025, the ports of Salalah, Sohar, and Duqm collectively handled a remarkable 2,427,195 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). This figure represents a significant increase from the 2,173,508 TEUs recorded in the same period last year. This uptick reflects not only the ports’ operational efficiency but also the growing demand for container services in the region.

Increased Ship Traffic

The total number of vessels docking at Omani ports and marine docks reached 6,586 in the first half of 2025. This stands in contrast to 5,930 ships reported during the same timeframe in 2024. Major contributors to this growth included prominent ports such as Sultan Qaboos Port, Shinas, and Salalah, highlighting the robust maritime infrastructure supporting Oman’s trade efforts.

Volume of Goods Handled

The total volume of goods processed through Omani ports in the first half of 2025 hit 70,114,527 tons. This represents a 5.2% increase compared to the previous year’s figure of 66,620,847 tonnes. The boost in cargo handling illustrates the ports’ essential role in supporting Oman’s economy through efficient supply chain management.

Diverse Cargo Operations

Musa bin Baqer provided valuable insights into the types of cargo managed during this period. The ports welcomed 50,248 vehicles and saw the import of 2,694,293 heads of livestock. These numbers signify the varied economic activities facilitated by the ports, showcasing their operational diversity and effectiveness in handling different types of cargo.

Ongoing Development Initiatives

In addition to operational statistics, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology is actively investing in future projects to enhance the maritime sector. Recent awards for consultancy services include the design and supervision of the Khor Jarama development project. This initiative aims to optimize the site’s maritime capabilities and overall readiness. Additionally, tenders for the rehabilitation of Shannah and Masirah ports have been awarded, signifying ongoing commitments to upgrade and improve port facilities.

Conclusion

With the steady rise in container handling, ship traffic, and overall cargo volumes, Omani ports are solidifying their position as vital maritime hubs in the region. The ongoing infrastructure enhancements and diverse cargo capabilities highlight a promising future for maritime trade in Oman, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic landscape.
