OpenAI Expands AI Capabilities with Inference Residency in UAE
OpenAI has officially launched its Inference Residency program in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), making it one of only three global locations—alongside the United States and Europe—where the company supports local inference residency. This initiative is designed to assist eligible customers utilizing the API, ChatGPT Enterprise, and ChatGPT Edu in adopting artificial intelligence while adhering to local compliance and operational requirements.
Enhancing Local AI Adoption
The introduction of UAE Inference Residency allows enterprises, public-sector institutions, and educational providers to run model inference on GPUs located within the country, rather than merely storing data locally. This capability ensures that GPU inference can be restricted to UAE-based engines, building on the existing UAE Data Residency framework and marking a significant advancement towards local compute residency.
AI adoption is rapidly gaining momentum in the UAE, fueled by increasing interest from enterprises and a supportive government roadmap aimed at establishing the nation as an AI leader under its National AI Strategy 2031. Recent policy initiatives, including the formation of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Artificial Intelligence and Data, along with evolving data-localization mandates for regulated sectors, underscore the importance of in-country AI processing for sensitive workloads in government, healthcare, and finance.

Support for Regional Institutions
Farouk El Hamzawi, Head of Enterprise at OpenAI MENA, emphasized the rapid pace of AI adoption among organizations in the UAE, attributing this growth to the government’s long-term vision and commitment to technological advancement. He stated, “With the launch of UAE Inference Residency, we are giving eligible customers greater control over where AI workloads are executed, building on our existing residency offerings and supporting institutions that need stronger regional assurances as they scale AI adoption.”
This new residency initiative follows OpenAI’s announcement of UAE Data Residency last September, representing a crucial step in equipping local institutions with the necessary tools, security, and flexibility to responsibly and effectively adopt AI technologies within the Emirates.
