In a groundbreaking move to bolster the cyber security defenses of India’s power grid, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK), and the National Power Training Institute (NPTI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic partnership aims to strengthen research and training capabilities in the domain of cyber security, particularly focusing on the critical infrastructure of the nation’s power systems.

The collaboration between IIT Kanpur, a renowned institution for its excellence in science and engineering education, and NPTI, a key player in power sector training, marks a significant step towards safeguarding the country’s power grid against the escalating threat of cyberattacks.

The MoU outlines the establishment of an Operations Technology (OT) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Cyber Security Lab at NPTI, with the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) as a key initial step. This state-of-the-art lab will play a crucial role in enhancing the cyber security preparedness of power system operators in India.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, stressed the importance of fortifying critical infrastructure against cyber threats, highlighting the increasing frequency of cyber intrusions.
