Major Operation Dismantles Archetyp Market, a Leading Dark Web Drug Hub
Law enforcement agencies across Europe have successfully shut down Archetyp Market, one of the longest-running dark web drug marketplaces. This significant operation spanned six countries and was backed by critical support from Europol and Eurojust.

Between June 11 and June 13, a series of meticulously planned actions took place in Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and Sweden. Authorities specifically targeted the platform’s administrator, moderators, key vendors, and the underlying technical infrastructure. Approximately 300 officers were mobilized for enforcement efforts, ensuring the collection of vital evidence to support the case against the marketplace.

For over five years, Archetyp Market served as a hub for illegal drug transactions, attracting a user base of over 600,000 individuals globally. The marketplace conducted a staggering €250 million in transactions, featuring more than 17,000 listings. Its offerings included highly potent synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which significantly contributed to the escalating threat of drug abuse across Europe and beyond.
Key Arrests and Asset Seizures
The operation not only dismantled the website’s infrastructure in the Netherlands but also led to the arrest of its administrator, a 30-year-old German national, in Barcelona, Spain. Concurrently, actions were taken in Germany and Sweden that resulted in the arrest of one moderator and six of the marketplace’s top vendors. Law enforcement also seized assets valued at around €7.8 million during the operation.

This crackdown, led by German authorities, signifies the end of a criminal enterprise that facilitated the anonymous exchange of a wide array of illicit drugs, including cocaine, MDMA, and synthetics. The operation highlights the platform’s prominence in the criminal underworld, placing it alongside defunct marketplaces like Dream Market and Silk Road, which were infamous for their roles in drug trafficking.

Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Europol’s Deputy Executive Director of Operations, emphasized the importance of this operation, stating, “With this takedown, law enforcement has taken out one of the dark web’s longest-running drug markets, cutting off a major supply line for some of the world’s most dangerous substances. By dismantling its infrastructure and arresting its key players, we are sending a clear message: there is no safe haven for those who profit from harm.”
