Pony.ai Set to Launch Self-Driving Robotaxis in Dubai

Pony.ai, a leading name in autonomous vehicle technology, is gearing up to launch a fleet of self-driving robotaxis in Dubai. This exciting development stems from a recently established Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), paving the way for the deployment of its advanced robotaxi fleet in one of the world’s most bustling cities.

A Commitment to Innovation

The collaboration highlights Pony.ai’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving technology. Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at RTA, expressed that this partnership is a significant step in furthering Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy. The goal is ambitious: transforming 25% of all journeys in the city into autonomous trips by 2030. This initiative not only positions Dubai as a leader in autonomous mobility but also underscores a broader commitment to innovation in urban transport.

Advancing Urban Mobility

Speaking on this partnership, Bahrozyan remarked, "We are thrilled to collaborate with Pony.ai, a pioneer in autonomous driving technology. This partnership is integral to enhancing the integration of smart transport solutions within Dubai." His emphasis on smart transport speaks to broader goals of urban development that embrace technology for improved efficiency and sustainability.

Dr. Leo Wang, CFO of Pony.ai, also noted, “Dubai is at the forefront of intelligent urban mobility innovation, and we are privileged to partner with RTA on this transformative initiative.” This collaboration aims to empower Dubai’s transition to autonomous transportation using Pony.ai’s proven technology and operational know-how.

Strategic Rollout of Robotaxi Fleet

Aligned with Dubai’s Smart City Vision for 2030, the rollout of the robotaxi fleet will occur in multiple phases. The initial supervised trials are slated to begin in 2025, setting the stage for fully driverless operations to commence in 2026. This phased approach ensures a thorough evaluation of the technology and its integration within Dubai’s unique urban landscape.

Pony.ai is on track to mass-produce its seventh-generation robotaxis by the second half of 2025. This new fleet aims to strongly position the company for global expansion, with plans to scale its robotaxi fleet to thousands of vehicles worldwide within the next few years. The company aims for 2025 to mark the beginning of large-scale commercial deployment, driven by advancements in technology, vehicle design, and operational efficiency.

Technology and Partnerships

The seventh-generation autonomous driving system was recently showcased at Auto Shanghai 2025, demonstrating the advanced technological capabilities of Pony.ai’s vehicles. To bring this vision to life, Pony.ai collaborates with industry giants such as Toyota, GAC Motor, and BAIC Motor in the development of its robotaxis. Mass deployment, expected later this year, follows the vehicles’ successful introduction in Shanghai last April.

Pony.ai has developed a comprehensive operation system for its robotaxis, encompassing fully automated processes from dispatch to service completion. The company has made significant strides in China, being the first autonomous driving firm to offer fully driverless ride-hailing services across major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Its fleet of around 300 vehicles navigates complex urban environments, including heavily populated areas, underscoring the adaptability of its solutions to various global contexts.

Envisioning a Sustainable Future

Dr. Wang emphasized Pony.ai’s commitment to using its experience from China to enhance urban mobility in Dubai. "Our goal is to provide residents and visitors with driverless technology that is not only greener and safer but also makes navigation throughout the city more convenient," he stated.

Looking ahead, Pony.ai envisions integrating its robotaxi services with Dubai’s multimodal transport network, which includes metro, tram, and maritime routes. This would create a cohesive transport ecosystem, enhancing user experience while contributing to the reduction of the city’s carbon emissions.

Expanding Global Footprint

To date, Pony.ai has secured testing permits for its robotaxi services in four significant markets: the United States, China, South Korea, and Luxembourg. The new partnership in Dubai represents a strategic expansion into the Middle East, further solidifying Pony.ai’s presence as a forerunner in the realm of autonomous mobility solutions.

This partnership not only advances transportation in Dubai but marks a notable chapter in Pony.ai’s broader mission to innovate and enhance mobility in urban settings worldwide.
