Study on Cyber Threats in the Middle East: Insights from Positive Technologies at GITEX 2024

Cybersecurity experts at Positive Technologies have revealed alarming findings in their latest study on cyber threats in the Middle East, presented at GITEX 2024. The study highlighted a sharp increase in hacktivist attacks, particularly amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in the region. APT groups were also identified as frequent threats, with every second successful attack resulting in a data breach.

Irina Zinovkina, Head of Information Security Analytics Research at Positive Technologies, emphasized the evolving nature of cyber conflict strategies, noting a surge in hacktivist attacks as a key indicator. She warned of potential DDoS attacks on media and government institutions, as well as the possibility of large-scale cyberattacks if groups form alliances.

Government institutions and the energy sector were primary targets for cybercriminal groups, with the public sector being the most vulnerable industry. Dark web listings revealed a significant demand for confidential government data, while the manufacturing sector faced threats from wipers that could disrupt critical infrastructure.

Malware and social engineering tactics remained popular tools for cybercriminals, with a notable increase in email phishing attacks leveraging AI technologies. Data breaches emerged as the primary consequence of successful cyberattacks, surpassing the global average in terms of damage.

To combat these threats, experts recommended a result-driven cybersecurity approach, utilizing advanced tools such as SIEM systems, EDR systems, and specialized solutions for traffic analysis. Continuous security assessment and employee training initiatives were also highlighted as essential components of a proactive cyber resilience strategy in the face of escalating cyber threats in the Middle East.
