According to McKinsey’s Quantum Technology Monitor 2026, quantum computing could unlock up to $2.7 trillion in economic value globally by 2035. The Quantum Insider projects that this sector will create 840,000 new jobs by 2035, highlighting a significant opportunity for professionals in cybersecurity. However, the same technology poses a threat to existing encryption methods, necessitating a workforce skilled in quantum-safe practices.

The Dual Threat Landscape

The threats posed by quantum computing are not merely theoretical. A strategy known as “harvest now, decrypt later” allows adversaries to intercept and store encrypted data today, planning to decrypt it once quantum computers become powerful enough. This risk is underscored by recent executive orders from the White House aimed at securing sensitive data against future quantum threats.

Additionally, the rise of agentic AI—systems capable of executing complex tasks with minimal human oversight—has been identified as a leading attack vector. A Dark Reading poll indicates that 48% of cybersecurity professionals view agentic AI as the top threat, surpassing traditional concerns like ransomware. This convergence of quantum threats and AI-driven attacks creates a unique challenge for cybersecurity professionals, making those who can navigate both domains particularly valuable.

Regulatory Responses and Job Creation

Governments worldwide are responding to these threats with new regulations, which in turn create job opportunities. In the U.S., the National Institute of Standards and Technology has established post-quantum cryptography standards, while the European Union has mandated a transition to quantum-safe practices by 2030. Organizations across these jurisdictions will require skilled professionals to facilitate this migration.

Interdisciplinary Demand in Quantum Cybersecurity

Quantum cybersecurity stands apart from traditional tech careers due to its interdisciplinary nature, encompassing cryptography, computer science, mathematics, physics, and artificial intelligence. This broad scope creates demand for various roles, including cryptographers, cybersecurity analysts, and compliance specialists. The World Economic Forum notes a significant skills gap, with only one qualified candidate for every three open quantum positions.

India’s Role in the Quantum Workforce

India is strategically positioned to address the skills gap in quantum cybersecurity. The National Quantum Mission, approved in April 2023, aims to develop a robust workforce and infrastructure for quantum technologies. A recent study revealed that 73% of Indian businesses struggle to find skilled cybersecurity professionals, emphasizing the urgent need for training programs. NASSCOM estimates that India will need around 25,000 trained professionals in quantum security over the next five to seven years.

Pathways to a Career in Quantum Cybersecurity

  1. Build a foundation in security principles, including networking and encryption.
  2. Familiarize yourself with post-quantum cryptography standards.
