Texas Level 1 Trauma Center in Lubbock Forced to Divert Patients Due to Ransomware Attack

The University Medical Center (UMC) Health System in Lubbock, Texas, is facing a crisis as it grapples with a ransomware attack that has forced the facility to divert patients to nearby health facilities. As the only level 1 trauma center in West Texas, UMC plays a critical role in providing emergency medical care to the region.

Despite being the 10th-largest city in Texas, Lubbock is known for its rich musical history as the birthplace of Buddy Holly and other musicians. However, the current situation at UMC has put a spotlight on the vulnerabilities of healthcare systems to cyberattacks.

UMC has confirmed that it is working with third parties to address the issue, but there is no estimated timeline for full restoration of services. Some departments and providers are currently diverting patients or operating on downtime procedures, causing delays in non-emergency labs and radiology services.

Ransomware attacks in the healthcare sector have been on the rise, with over 800 incidents reported since 2020. The impact of such attacks can be devastating, leading to disruptions in patient care and costly cleanup processes. Healthcare breaches are twice as expensive as the average data breach, highlighting the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures in the industry.

As UMC and other healthcare organizations continue to grapple with cyber threats, it is crucial for them to take advantage of free cybersecurity services and resources offered by organizations like the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The incident at UMC serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure against cyber threats to ensure the continuity of essential services.
