Strategic Alliance to Enhance Fire Safety in Sharjah
Overview of the Collaboration
In a significant move to bolster fire and life safety standards, the Sharjah Civil Defence Authority (SCDA) has partnered with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®). This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during an official ceremony at Intersec Dubai 2026. The signing involved His Excellency Brigadier Yousif Obaid Al Shamsi, Director General of SCDA, and Jim Pauley, the president and CEO of NFPA.
Focus on Training and Education
At the heart of this alliance is a commitment to enhancing training and educational initiatives for professionals in the fire safety field. The partnership aims to leverage NFPA’s extensive resources, which include over 300 fire codes and standards. Utilizing insights gained from the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem, the SCDA will create tailored safety standards designed to meet the specific needs of Sharjah.
Brigadier Yousif Obaid Al Shamsi emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Fire and life safety are paramount for us at SCDA. By partnering with NFPA, we’re looking to utilize their 130 years of experience to equip fire safety professionals in Sharjah with current and relevant knowledge pertaining to fire and electrical risks. This initiative highlights our commitment to continuous improvement and proactive safety measures.”
Addressing Current Safety Challenges
The timing of this partnership is crucial as it coincides with Sharjah’s heightened focus on fire safety, particularly in high-rise buildings. Under the guidance of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Emirate has initiated a groundbreaking plan to replace hazardous cladding materials with fire-resistant options—an initiative valued at AED 100 million and fully funded by the government.
Jim Pauley remarked on the importance of implementing robust fire safety systems amid ongoing urban development in Sharjah. “With so many high-rise buildings emerging, it’s vital that we have comprehensive fire and life safety protocols in place. We’re eager to collaborate with SCDA to enhance training for safety professionals and ensure adherence to relevant codes and standards.”
Aligning with Global Safety Standards
The partnership between SCDA and NFPA has been strategically designed to reinforce existing initiatives and support ongoing efforts to elevate safety standards across the Emirate. With a focus on global best practices, this collaboration will enable Sharjah to align its safety measures with internationally recognized benchmarks.
