Sheikh Mohammed’s Visit to Etihad Rail: A Commitment to National Infrastructure

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, along with the Ruler of Dubai, undertook a significant journey between Dubai and Fujairah to assess the progress of the Etihad Rail project. This visit underscores his dedication to overseeing strategic infrastructure projects that align with the UAE’s overarching national development goals.

A Glimpse into the Future of Etihad Rail

The Etihad Rail project is set to initiate commercial operations in 2026. Speaking during his visit, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted its importance, describing it as one of the most consequential infrastructure initiatives in the UAE. He emphasized that the project will have far-reaching economic, social, and developmental effects across the nation.

Etihad Rail: An Economic Catalyst

"Etihad Rail serves as a crucial economic artery that will propel the UAE toward its future," Sheikh Mohammed remarked. He outlined its essential role in constructing an integrated transport network designed to reinforce the UAE’s standing as a leading logistics hub. This network aims to facilitate the efficient movement of both people and goods across the country.

According to a report from WAM, Sheikh Mohammed expressed gratitude to the team behind the Etihad Rail project. He acknowledged their efforts, deeming them a point of national pride and an important contribution to developing an advanced, sustainable transport system.

Building a World-Class Rail Network

During his visit, the team responsible for Etihad Rail briefed Sheikh Mohammed on the various milestones achieved thus far. They characterized this moment as historic, inspiring a renewed dedication to delivering a premier national rail network that will serve the UAE’s diverse communities.

Saeed AlAhbabi, Chief Business Support Officer at Etihad Rail, and other senior executives welcomed Sheikh Mohammed during the tour. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, remarked on the significance of having Sheikh Mohammed on board a passenger train journey between Dubai and Fujairah.

"This highlights our leadership’s unwavering commitment to national projects that drive progress," he stated. He elaborated on how Sheikh Mohammed has been instrumental throughout the project’s development phases, from the unveiling of the ‘Projects of the 50’ initiative in 2021 to the full operationalization of the national railway network, which includes starting freight train services in 2023.

Connecting the UAE: A National Vision

Once operational, the passenger stations in both Dubai and Fujairah will become vital connectors within the expanded national railway network. This initiative is designed to enhance connectivity across various regions of the UAE, providing citizens, residents, and visitors with a fully integrated travel experience. The project aims to adhere to the highest standards of comfort, reliability, and operational excellence.

A Comprehensive Travel Network

The Etihad Rail service will connect 11 cities and regions, ranging from Al Sila to Fujairah, linking key urban centers and communities across the Emirates. This project speaks to the UAE’s commitment to fostering unity, connectivity, and sustainability while progressing towards its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2050.

With train speeds reaching up to 200 km/h, the initial four passenger stations will be strategically located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. Each train is designed to accommodate approximately 400 passengers, projecting annual ridership of 36.5 million by 2030.

In summary, Sheikh Mohammed’s visit emphasizes not just the importance of the Etihad Rail project, but also its potential to fundamentally transform the UAE’s transportation landscape. The initiative is a stepping stone toward a future marked by greater connectivity, enhanced economic integration, and sustainable development.
