Navigating Digital Parenting: Insights from Kaspersky’s "Growing Up Online" Report

Kaspersky and UAE Cyber Security Council Unveil Report on Children’s Online Behavior

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Kaspersky and the UAE Cyber Security Council have released a report titled “Growing Up Online,” shedding light on the intricate dynamics of children’s online behavior and offering essential guidance for parents navigating the digital landscape. As students transition back to school, the report highlights the dual-edged sword of technology in education and its potential pitfalls.

The findings reveal that a staggering 93% of parents in the UAE provide gadgets to their children primarily for educational purposes. However, the report raises alarms about the excessive time children spend online, with 30% of parents reporting conflicts over screen time. Alarmingly, 64% of these disputes stem from concerns about their children’s online habits, as older kids increasingly gravitate towards digital devices, raising fears of gadget addiction.

The emotional toll of digital dependency is striking, with 80% of children expressing they cannot live without their gadgets. The report indicates that when devices run out of battery, 45% of kids feel very sad, while 28% experience anger, and 12% report fear. These heightened emotions can lead to significant conflicts and impact children’s psychological well-being.

Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Cybersecurity Council, emphasizes the importance of balancing digital engagement with real-world experiences. “The real world can be even more engaging,” he notes, urging families to invest time in joint activities to strengthen bonds.

Seifallah Jedidi, Head of Consumer Channel for META at Kaspersky, stresses the need for parents to monitor their children’s online activities and establish healthy tech boundaries. To support families, Kaspersky and the UAE Cyber Security Council recommend tools like Kaspersky Safe Kids to manage screen time effectively.

As the school year unfolds, this report serves as a crucial resource for parents aiming to foster a safe and balanced digital environment for their children.
