Indian Tax Officials Uncover ₹25,000 Crore GST Evasion Scheme Involving 18,000 Shell Companies
In a significant crackdown on tax fraud, Indian tax enforcement officials have uncovered around 18,000 fictitious companies involved in a massive Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion scheme amounting to an alarming ₹25,000 crore. This revelation stems from a thorough anti-fraud operation that scrutinized 73,000 suspicious GST Identification Numbers (GSTINs) suspected of being shell entities designed to exploit input tax credit (ITC) benefits without any legitimate business transactions.
According to a senior official, the investigation’s verification process confirmed that approximately 18,000 of the flagged companies were entirely nonexistent. The collective tax evasion attributed to these entities reached a staggering ₹24,550 crore. In a bid to rectify their positions, some companies proactively remitted GST payments totaling ₹70 crore during the enforcement drive.
This operation, which commenced on August 16 and concluded at the end of October, marked the second nationwide initiative aimed at curbing GST fraud. The government’s clampdown comes amid rising concerns over compliance, leading to the implementation of more stringent physical verification protocols for GST registrations. In a similar previous campaign held from May 16 to July 15, 2023, authorities exposed 21,791 fake GST-registered entities, revealing an estimated tax evasion of ₹24,010 crore.
The relentless efforts of tax authorities reflect a firm commitment to combatting GST fraud and ensuring adherence to the national tax framework. The detection of these ghost companies underscores the sophisticated tactics employed by tax evaders, as well as the government’s evolving capacity to tackle such fraudulent schemes effectively.
As the investigations continue, the focus remains on reinforcing the integrity of India’s taxation system and safeguarding genuine businesses from the repercussions of fraudulent activities.
