TikTok Hosts Inaugural Digital Well-Being Summit in Johannesburg

Gathering for Digital Wellness

On a mission to enhance online safety and community support, TikTok recently convened its first Digital Well-Being Summit in Johannesburg. This landmark event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, mental health professionals, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and industry leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa. Delegates from countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe came together to engage in meaningful discussions aimed at advancing digital well-being initiatives.

New Tools and Partnerships

During the summit, TikTok unveiled a robust suite of new features designed to promote mental health and digital literacy on its platform. A focal point of this initiative is the expansion of TikTok’s existing $2.3 million global mental health fund to specifically support organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, TikTok has enhanced local in-app helplines and launched a groundbreaking meditation feature available to all users.

The event highlighted TikTok’s ongoing commitment to improving mental health awareness through campaigns such as #MentalHealthMatters, which aims to foster positive mental health practices globally. By prioritizing balanced digital habits, TikTok is equipping users with access to the information and support they need.

Introducing In-App Meditation Features

In a major step towards user well-being, TikTok has rolled out a guided meditation experience known as Sleep Hours. This feature is automatically activated for users under 18 starting at 10 PM, although older users can opt-in as well. Initially piloted in March 2025, this meditative tool is now available worldwide, encouraging young users to build healthier nighttime routines and improve sleep quality.

Research supports the idea that mindfulness practices can significantly enhance sleep quality, particularly for adolescents coping with the challenges of a digitally connected life. TikTok’s initiative aligns with its overarching mission to foster better emotional regulation and digital well-being among its younger audience.

Expanding Mental Health Education Efforts

A significant announcement at the summit was the expansion of TikTok’s Mental Health Education Fund to include Sub-Saharan African organizations for the first time. This marks a major advancement in TikTok’s ongoing effort to support mental health education across the continent.

Three organizations were selected as the inaugural recipients of this funding: the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative, and Kenya’s Mental360. Each of these organizations will have the resources to create locally relevant mental health content focused on raising awareness, minimizing stigma, and encouraging open conversations around mental health.

The Mental Health Education Fund was established in 2023 and has since empowered organizations globally, generating over 173 million impressions and aiding in the recruitment of new volunteers through its initiatives.

Launching In-App Mental Health Helplines

Building on a successful pilot program in France and subsequent rollouts in Europe, TikTok is set to expand its in-app helpline resources throughout Africa. Soon, users in several African nations will have direct access to localized helplines offering expert guidance for issues related to suicide, self-harm, and harassment.

These helplines aim to provide various forms of support, including counseling and psychological assistance, ensuring users can get the help they need while TikTok reviews reported concerns. This initiative enhances the platform’s existing commitment to safeguarding users by connecting them to crucial mental health resources.

Introducing Mental Health Ambassadors

As part of its collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), TikTok has launched a new cohort of Mental Health Ambassadors. This diverse group includes verified healthcare professionals aiming to promote positive online well-being across the continent. The inaugural ambassadors come from various backgrounds, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to mental health.

Meet the First Mentors:

  • Sanam Naran (South Africa)
  • Dr. Claire Kinuthia (Kenya)
  • Doctor Wales (Nigeria)
  • Doctor Siya (South Africa)

Commitment to Digital Safety

The Digital Well-Being Summit principles underscore TikTok’s dedication to addressing digital challenges through safety, innovation, and collaboration. With the integration of advanced safety technology, partnerships with mental health experts, and a focus on community engagement, TikTok aims to create an empowering and responsible online environment for its African users.

As highlighted by Yusuf Akoojee of Spectra, the collaboration reflects a shared vision to enhance digital spaces that prioritize both mental health and online safety. This multifaceted approach illustrates TikTok’s ambition to lead the way in fostering supportive online communities in Africa and beyond.
