Uber Launches Women Drivers Feature in Saudi Arabia
Uber is set to introduce a groundbreaking feature called “Women Drivers” in Saudi Arabia, allowing women passengers to connect exclusively with female drivers through the app. This initiative reflects a significant milestone in the advancement of mobility options and economic empowerment for women in the Kingdom.
A Step Towards Inclusion
The launch of this feature is particularly timely, coinciding with the seventh anniversary of the landmark decision that lifted the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. This new offering underscores Uber’s commitment to improving social mobility and fostering economic inclusion, aligning with the broader goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
User-Friendly Experience
The Women Drivers feature is designed with user comfort in mind. Set to roll out in phases over the coming weeks, it aims to make women feel secure and affirmed while using Uber’s services. Here’s how it works:
On-Demand Rides
The Women Drivers product operates similarly to UberX, enabling women riders to be matched with female drivers at comparable rates. Users will be able to select this option from the product mini-list within the app.
Advance Reservations
For those who prefer a more structured approach, the option to reserve rides up to 30 minutes in advance is available through the Uber Reserve feature, providing added convenience for women planning their day.
Empowering Women Through Mobility
Youssef Abouseif, Uber’s General Manager for Saudi Arabia, emphasized the importance of mobility for women in the country. “Women across Saudi Arabia have shown how mobility can open the door to new possibilities,” he stated. He further explained that Uber views the future as one that is not only electric and shared but also deeply inclusive. The introduction of the Women Drivers product demonstrates Uber’s ongoing commitment to empowering women and promoting their economic independence.
Partnership with Alnahda Society
To bolster this initiative, Uber is teaming up with Alnahda Society, a prominent non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women socio-economically since 1962. This partnership aims to enhance women’s mobility through various capacity-building programs, including financial literacy workshops that equip women with critical skills for independence.
This collaboration builds on previous efforts by Uber and Alnahda, such as the Masaruky initiative, which successfully supported thousands of women in obtaining driving licenses and entering the workforce.
Building Community: The GigSister Program
In addition to the Women Drivers feature, Uber will launch its inaugural GigSister program in Saudi Arabia. This initiative will create a dedicated platform for women drivers to connect, share stories, and develop a supportive community. It serves as a testament to Uber’s commitment to investing in women’s success beyond just mobility solutions.
Continuing Support for Women
Over the years, Uber has implemented various programs to facilitate women’s participation in the labor force in Saudi Arabia. Initiatives like Wusool have provided over 20 million subsidized rides for women, while the Women Rider Preference feature allows female drivers to select only female riders. Each of these programs is thoughtfully designed to enhance women’s roles in the workforce while aligning with the Kingdom’s socio-economic objectives.
Uber’s newest feature and its associated initiatives represent a meaningful step towards empowering women in Saudi Arabia, creating not just opportunities for mobility but a pathway for economic independence and community building.
