The internet today is a vast and complex landscape, divided into three main tiers: the surface web, the deep web, and the dark web. While most are familiar with the surface web—comprising everyday websites—many remain unaware of the more hidden aspects of the internet, particularly the dark web. This shadowy segment requires specific tools, like Tor (The Onion Router), for access and is designed to uphold anonymity.
The Origins of the Dark Web
The dark web’s roots can be traced back to the 1990s, emerging from a project funded by the United States Department of Defense. The original goal was to establish a secure communication network for intelligence agents. Over time, this initiative evolved into the Tor network, which now supports a wide array of activities, both legitimate and illicit.
Drug Trafficking and the Dark Web
One of the primary activities that thrive within the dark web’s cloak of anonymity is drug trafficking. Illicit marketplaces on the dark web resemble conventional online shopping platforms, displaying a variety of narcotics, complete with customer reviews and promises of discreet delivery. Transactions are typically conducted using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which offer users enhanced privacy.
The dark web saw notable platforms such as Silk Road, which operated until its shutdown in 2013. The legacy of Silk Road paved the way for other illegal marketplaces like Silk Road 2, Evolution, and Agora, which continue to concern law enforcement agencies globally, including those in India. These platforms help traffickers evade detection while catering to a global audience, complicating efforts to combat drug-related crime.
Increased Cyber Surveillance in Kerala
In light of escalating dark web activities, particularly regarding drugs, the Kerala Police have ramped up their cyber surveillance efforts. A specialized unit within the state’s Cyber Dome has been established to monitor transactions occurring on the dark web.
This dedicated team is composed of cybersecurity experts, ethical hackers, and other professionals focusing on the dark web’s illicit activities. Authorities have found that many individuals from Kerala, also known as Malayalis, are actively involved in illegal dealings spanning narcotics, malware distribution, and even counterfeit luxury goods. To track these transactions effectively, law enforcement is employing new software tools developed by cyber specialists.
Major Drug Syndicate Dismantled
Kerala Police’s efforts have coincided with a major operation, codenamed “MELON,” spearheaded by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). This operation successfully dismantled one of India’s largest darknet drug syndicates, named “Ketamelon.”
During this high-profile bust, authorities seized 1,127 LSD blots and 131.66 grams of Ketamine, collectively valued at approximately ₹35.12 lakh. Digital assets worth ₹70 lakh were also confiscated, bringing the total recovery to over ₹1 crore.
The syndicate was found to be orchestrated by Edison from Muvattupuzha, employing Monero (XMR), a cryptocurrency favored for anonymity in illegal transactions. In a notable interception on June 28, 2025, authorities seized 280 LSD blots from postal parcels. A subsequent search uncovered an additional 847 LSD blots, Ketamine, and various digital assets that further implicated the syndicate’s operations.
Tracking Darknet Ratings and Previous Precedents
The NCB’s initiative to combat dark web crime has precedents, such as the dismantling of the Zambada cartel in 2023, which was recognized as one of the largest LSD trafficking organizations in the country at that time. This operation resulted in 29,013 LSD blots and a significant cash seizure. Darknet vendors often receive ratings from one to five stars, reflecting the quality of their products and services.
LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), a hallucinogenic drug, produces altered perceptions and is commonly referred to as acid, blots, or stamps. Users frequently report sensory distortions and intense emotional experiences.
A Call for Community Support
The NCB is determined to dismantle synthetic drug networks that operate through the dark web and cryptocurrency channels. In their pursuit of a drug-free India, officials urge the public to assist in this mission.
