Uncensored Access: The Launch of OnionGPT on the Dark Web
Anonymous Developer Launches Uncensored AI Chatbot on Dark Web
In a bold move to challenge information censorship, an anonymous developer has unveiled OnionGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot designed to provide unrestricted access to information via the dark web. Announced on December 18, the service aims to empower users with a “smart assistant” that operates free from the constraints imposed by mainstream AI platforms.
Using the pseudonym “root,” the developer introduced OnionGPT on a dark web forum, stating, “Say hello to OnionGPT alpha. It’s an uncensored smart assistant accessible over Tor.” The Tor network, known for its privacy features, allows users to navigate the internet anonymously, making it an ideal platform for this controversial project.
OnionGPT is built on a language model dubbed DarkIdol-Llama-3.1-13.3B-Instruct-1.2-Uncensored, and is hosted on a Tor onion service, ensuring that users’ identities remain concealed. However, the chatbot is not without limitations; it only provides text responses, cannot generate images, and users must reload the page after each question.
Despite these constraints, OnionGPT has reportedly garnered over half a million visitors and delivers more than 5,000 responses daily. Root emphasized that while the service is “uncensored to the best of my abilities,” it strictly prohibits generating content related to minors, a measure implemented after noticing attempts to exploit the platform for inappropriate purposes.
AI expert Dr. Felix M. Simon from the Oxford Internet Institute cautioned that while OnionGPT’s unrestricted nature raises concerns, its dark web presence may limit its user base. “Most people will simply not want to go via a Tor browser,” he noted, highlighting the challenges of accessing such a service.
Root remains defiant, asserting, “It is of my personal opinion that information should be accessible freely no matter what,” echoing a philosophy of radical freedom in the digital age.
