Vicksburg, Mississippi, shuts down city systems following ransomware attack

Published:

A ransomware attack has led to the shutdown of computer systems in Vicksburg, Mississippi, as confirmed by Mayor Willis Thompson on Thursday. The incident, which has not affected emergency services, has disrupted utility payment systems, prompting the city to initiate an investigation with assistance from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

In a statement published in a local newspaper, Thompson assured residents that the system shutdown is “temporary” and that no utility services will be disconnected during the investigation. He emphasized that no penalties will be imposed for late payments while the city assesses the situation. The investigation aims to determine if any personal or confidential information of customers, contractors, or employees has been compromised.

Thompson noted that the city is collaborating with private cybersecurity experts to facilitate recovery efforts. However, he refrained from disclosing specific technical details that could hinder the investigation or the security of city systems. The city has not commented on whether a ransom has been demanded or the identity of the attackers.

Vicksburg, home to over 20,000 residents and located approximately 40 minutes west of Jackson, Mississippi, is not the first municipality in the state to face such a cyber incident. Recently, the University of Mississippi Medical Center experienced a significant ransomware attack that severely impacted its operations, requiring extensive recovery efforts with federal assistance. Additionally, a prominent electricity utility in Mississippi was targeted by ransomware gangs last year, highlighting a troubling trend of cyber threats in the region.

The ongoing investigation into the Vicksburg ransomware attack underscores the increasing vulnerability of municipal systems to cyber threats, raising concerns about the potential for data breaches and the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
