Hultquist, with over two decades of experience tracking sophisticated cyber threats, highlights a considerable shift in how organizations in the region approach cybersecurity. “Organizations are no longer treating cybersecurity as an afterthought,” he says, noting increased investments and engagement from leadership. Events like GISEC showcase a maturity in thinking that prioritizes cohesive security strategies over merely purchasing tools.

However, challenges persist. Hultquist points out that the gaps are less about technology and more about integration and strategy. “Many organizations have strong tools, but they lack the processes and skills to maximize their potential.” A primary concern is the need for better cyber hygiene throughout organizations, especially with social engineering attacks remaining common.

The discussion turns to the use of generative AI by cybercriminals. “For three years, we’ve observed threat actors leveraging AI to upscale their attacks,” Hultquist notes. They’re crafting sophisticated phishing emails and generating fake documentation, making it far easier to execute targeted attacks.

In light of these evolving threats, Google has announced a partnership with the UAE government to establish a Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence. “This center will act as a hub for expertise, intelligence sharing, and training to bolster regional resilience,” Hultquist explains.

As the cyber threat landscape becomes increasingly complex, collaboration and knowledge sharing are critical for enhancing the Middle East’s cybersecurity posture. Hultquist concludes that being proactive, integrating threat intelligence, and fostering a strong cybersecurity culture are essential steps for organizations aiming to safeguard against emerging threats.
