Wokingham Man Jailed for Dark Web Drug Trafficking
A 58-year-old man from Wokingham has been sentenced to nine years and six months in prison for his role in a dark web drug trafficking operation. Kevin Richardson, of Station Road, was found guilty of multiple drug-related offenses, including the supply of controlled substances such as morphine and diazepam.
The sentencing took place at Reading Crown Court on January 22, following Richardson’s guilty plea to several serious charges. These included four counts of fraudulently evading the prohibition on the exportation of morphine, as well as multiple counts of supplying and possessing controlled drugs with intent to distribute.
The investigation, led by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), culminated in a raid on Richardson’s home on April 26, 2022. Officers discovered a staggering 99,000 capsules of various medications, including zopiclone, pregabalin, and tramadol, with an estimated street value of £77,000. In addition, authorities seized £12,000 in cryptocurrency and £8,000 in cash.
Specialist Investigator Elena Vickers emphasized the dangers of purchasing pharmaceutical products from the dark web. “Richardson recklessly distributed these drugs to vulnerable individuals worldwide, disregarding the potentially devastating consequences,” she stated. Vickers warned that while these capsules may appear legitimate, they can be manufactured with unsafe ingredients, posing serious health risks.
The case highlights the ongoing battle against illegal drug distribution online, as authorities continue to crack down on those exploiting the anonymity of the dark web. Vickers urged anyone who may have purchased drugs through such channels to seek medical attention, underscoring the importance of obtaining medications through licensed healthcare providers.
