Veeam Software has released findings from its latest Data Resilience survey, which involved over 4,000 C-Suite and senior IT leaders. The survey highlights a significant challenge: as organizations leverage data and artificial intelligence (AI) for business success, they face heightened vulnerabilities to data loss and outages. Despite the potential of AI, many organizations remain ill-prepared for the associated risks, underscoring the need for robust data governance and security measures.

The Urgency of Data Resilience

The annual observance of World Backup Day emphasizes that regular and reliable backups are foundational to digital trust and business continuity. Veeam’s research indicates that concerns regarding data outages have surpassed fears of economic recession among executives. This shift in priorities highlights the necessity for organizations to prioritize backup and recovery planning as essential components of their operational strategies.

Ransomware and cyberattacks are the leading threats identified by business leaders, with 67% expressing significant concern over these risks in the coming year. In contrast, AI-related risks, such as data leaks and algorithm bias, are acknowledged by 29% of respondents, indicating that these emerging threats are becoming a focal point in boardroom discussions. Nearly half of the organizations surveyed (47%) anticipate a significant data breach or cyberattack, yet only 32% believe they can fully recover critical data and business operations. Consequently, 62% of leaders view data outages as a more pressing financial threat than economic downturns, making resilience a top priority.

Dave Russell, Senior Vice President and Head of Strategy at Veeam, emphasized the importance of trust in data in today’s AI-driven environment. He stated that backups represent the last line of truth in a landscape where AI can generate misinformation, ransomware can encrypt vital data, and a single misconfiguration can lead to widespread infrastructure failures. Russell called for boards and IT leaders to implement comprehensive backup strategies to ensure data resilience, arguing that maintaining operational continuity is essential for thriving in the AI era.

Data Outages: A Critical Business Risk

The survey findings reveal that trust in data is now a defining factor for business continuity and success. As organizations increasingly depend on data and AI systems, the risks associated with outages have become more pronounced. Key statistics from the survey include:

  • 76% of organizations would not survive more than three days of downtime following a complete data outage.
  • Nearly half (44%) of IT leaders lack confidence in their organizations’ ability to recover all critical data within 24 hours of a major cyberattack or data loss event.

The implications of these findings are significant. Organizations face potential loss of customer trust, reputational damage, regulatory fines, and even the risk of total business collapse. In the context of AI, data resilience is not merely an IT issue; it is a fundamental pillar of organizational trust.

The Need for AI Oversight and Accountability

Despite the increasing adoption of AI technologies, many boards and leadership teams are failing to adequately govern AI-related risks and resilience. The survey revealed that 38% of boards have never formally discussed AI-driven or emerging attack types, leaving organizations vulnerable and undermining trust in their AI capabilities. Additionally, only 31% of boards review resilience readiness, such as recovery key performance indicators (KPIs) or failover results, on a quarterly basis. Responsibility for resilience is often fragmented among CIOs, CISOs, Heads of Risk, and COOs.

Less than half of the surveyed organizations (49%) connect executive KPIs to resilience outcomes, and only 24% of leaders regularly engage in crisis simulations for data loss or disruption. This lack of clear ownership and accountability can lead to reactive responses to threats, rather than proactive strategies focused on building trust and resilience in AI and data management.

Key Findings on the Human and Technical Costs of Cyber Incidents

The survey also highlighted the human costs associated with cyber incidents. A significant 57% of leaders reported that employees have resigned, threatened to resign, or experienced burnout following major cyber incidents, with lost productivity and well-being being among the most unexpected impacts.

The leading causes of data loss were identified as follows:

  • External cyberattacks (26%)
  • Human error (23%)
  • System or hardware failure (16%)

Furthermore, 83% of organizations reported experiencing data outages that were not resolved immediately in the past five years, underscoring the urgent need for resilient and trusted data foundations.

World Backup Day serves not only as a reminder to back up data but also as a call for organizations to review, test, and enhance their data resilience strategies. The consequences of neglecting backup protocols can be severe, leading to loss of customer trust, reputational damage, compliance failures, and even business collapse.
