YouTube Strengthens Child Safety with Supervised Kid Accounts Across MENA

YouTube has recently introduced supervised kid accounts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), including the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance digital safety for children and young users in a region increasingly focused on secure online experiences.

The launch of supervised kid accounts marks a significant advancement in YouTube’s approach to age-appropriate content. These accounts are designed to empower young users to explore their creativity and curiosity while ensuring enhanced safety, privacy, and overall wellbeing.

Empowering Parents with Robust Controls

Supervised kid accounts place parents in control, offering a range of robust parental controls and a tailored environment directly integrated into the main YouTube app. This flexibility allows parents to customize their child’s experience according to individual family needs. The accounts are optional and can be deactivated at any time should parents choose to grant their child unrestricted access to the full YouTube platform.

This rollout coincides with the UAE’s recent implementation of a comprehensive legal framework governing children’s access to social media. Under these new regulations, children under 15 are prohibited from creating personal social media accounts. Teenagers aged 15 to 16 may use such platforms only under enhanced protections, including stronger parental controls and safer content settings. The regulations also mandate reliable age-verification systems, moving away from self-declared ages.

Tailored Content Settings for Young Users

Supervised kid accounts offer three distinct content settings for parents to select from, each aligning with international content ratings. The settings include:

  1. Explore: This setting features educational content, tutorials, arts and crafts, and dance.
  2. Explore More: In addition to the previous offerings, this setting includes gaming and live streams.
  3. Most of YouTube: This option provides access to nearly all YouTube videos, excluding those rated 18+ or deemed inappropriate for supervised accounts.

These content settings are complemented by user-friendly tools that enable parents to make informed choices for their families. Notably, the introduction of an industry-first Shorts feed timer allows parents to set daily limits for short-form content viewing. By adjusting the timer to zero, parents can completely disable scrolling through Shorts, which can be particularly useful during exam periods.

Built-In Controls for Mindful Viewing

Supervised kid accounts come equipped with built-in controls that apply by default to all users under 18. These features include “Take a Break” and “Bedtime” reminders, promoting mindful viewing habits. Certain standard features typically available on YouTube, such as content creation and commenting, are disabled for these accounts. Additionally, personalized ad targeting is not permitted, and autoplay is turned off by default.

The newly announced kid accounts complement existing supervised teen accounts available in the region. These teen accounts provide a voluntary experience that allows young users to explore most of YouTube while facilitating open communication with parents. Features include easy account linking for parents and teens, timely email notifications when a teenager uploads a video or starts a live stream, and shared insights into their channel activity.

Commitment to Educational Content and Safety

Javid Aslanov, Head of YouTube Middle East & North Africa, emphasized the platform’s integral role in family life across the region for over two decades. He noted that YouTube serves as a valuable resource for homework assistance and shared viewing experiences. Research conducted by Kantar indicates that 95% of viewers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE believe YouTube offers top-notch educational content, while 92% of Gen Z viewers report that it has helped them acquire new skills.

Garth Graham, Head of Health at YouTube, highlighted the importance of protecting young people within the digital landscape. He stated that thoughtful safeguards, such as kid and teen accounts, provide a safe space for exploration and learning, while ensuring that appropriate tools and boundaries are in place for family safety.

Supervised kid and teen accounts represent the latest development in YouTube’s long-standing commitment to family safety, which has evolved over more than a decade with guidance from independent child development specialists. YouTube Kids, a standalone app, offers a curated selection of age-appropriate videos, while Google Family Link provides parental controls to manage app usage, filter content, and track the location of a child’s Android device. YouTube continues to prioritize the safety, privacy, and wellbeing of young users as a core aspect of its platform.
