Zero-Click Flaw Discovered in OpenAI’s ChatGPT: Understanding ShadowLeak

Cybersecurity researchers have unveiled a significant vulnerability in OpenAI’s ChatGPT, specifically within its Deep Research feature. This flaw, identified as ShadowLeak, allows an attacker to extract sensitive information from a victim’s Gmail inbox without any direct interaction from the user. The implications of this discovery highlight the need for heightened awareness of AI security risks.

The ShadowLeak Vulnerability

Radware, the organization responsible for identifying this issue, reported it on June 18, 2025. OpenAI promptly addressed the flaw by early August, but the details reveal a sophisticated exploit. The vulnerability exploits what is known as indirect prompt injection, where harmful commands are stealthily embedded in an email’s HTML code. These commands can remain undetected by the user—hidden through techniques like tiny fonts or white-on-white text—allowing the AI agent to execute them without the user’s knowledge.

How the Attack Works

The mechanics of the attack are particularly concerning. When the victim receives an innocuous-looking email containing hidden instructions, those prompts direct the ChatGPT Deep Research agent to search through the victim’s Gmail for personal information. The extracted data is then encrypted and sent to an external server, effectively bypassing local defenses and traditional security measures.

What sets ShadowLeak apart from previous exploits is its direct interaction with OpenAI’s cloud infrastructure. Unlike previous vulnerabilities that relied on client-side operations, ShadowLeak operates within the cloud environment, making it even more challenging to detect and defend against.

Deep Research: A Dual-Edged Sword

Launched in February 2025, the Deep Research capability of ChatGPT allows users to conduct intricate research by summarizing and analyzing online content. This feature has also inspired similar functionalities in other AI platforms, such as Google Gemini and Perplexity. However, with great capability comes increased risk. The seamless integration of AI tools into everyday tasks raises questions about user privacy and data security.

Real-World Implications

In practical terms, this vulnerability requires users to enable the Gmail integration to initiate the attack. Still, similar methods could be employed to exploit any supported connector, including popular platforms like Dropbox, GitHub, and Microsoft Outlook. As such, the attack surface is extensive, broadening the potential for exploitation well beyond just Gmail.

Compared to previous threats like AgentFlayer and EchoLeak, which leaned on client-side processes, ShadowLeak’s remote data theft directly from the cloud presents a new kind of challenge for security personnel. This fundamental distinction raises alarms about the effectiveness of conventional security strategies that may not account for such advanced tactics.

Bypassing Security Measures

In a related observation, researchers from SPLX demonstrated another vulnerability involving ChatGPT’s ability to solve CAPTCHAs—a standard security measure intended to confirm human user interaction. By manipulating the chat context and cleverly reframing the CAPTCHA as a “fake” challenge, attackers could convince the AI to complete these tasks without the usual safeguards being triggered. This exploit illustrates the delicate balance between AI functionality and security that must be maintained.

A Broader Call for Awareness

As AI technology continues to evolve, so too do the methods employed by malicious actors. The emergence of vulnerabilities like ShadowLeak signals a pressing need for companies developing AI tools to prioritize security measures. Understanding and mitigating these risks is crucial for protecting user data against emerging threats in an increasingly interconnected digital landscape.

With the ongoing advancement of AI capabilities, organizations and individual users alike must stay vigilant, ensuring that they adopt robust security practices to safeguard against potential exploits.
