Government Training Program Strengthens Zimbabwe’s Cybersecurity Defenses
Zimbabwe’s government is stepping up its efforts to enhance national cybersecurity capabilities through a comprehensive training program for public officials. Over 100 government officials recently graduated from the program in Harare, equipped with the necessary knowledge to safeguard the country’s digital landscape.
The training program covered key topics such as global cybersecurity trends, international security standards, and enterprise data security governance practices. This initiative comes in response to recent high-profile hacking incidents within Zimbabwe, including social media accounts and a major bank’s systems being compromised.
Dr. Tatenda Maveteras, the Minister of Information Communication Technology, highlighted the importance of cybersecurity in today’s digital age, emphasizing the need to address cyber threats effectively. The government’s commitment to cybersecurity has garnered praise from partners like Huawei Zimbabwe, which has been supporting Zimbabwe’s digital transformation journey for over 25 years.
Huawei’s Managing Director, Yang Shengwan, commended Zimbabwe’s efforts in enhancing its digital defenses and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing cutting-edge technologies and expert training to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity posture. The partnership between Huawei and the Zimbabwean government aims to build a secure digital ecosystem in the face of evolving cyber threats.
Alfred Marisa, the Deputy Director General of POTRAZ, stressed the critical importance of cybersecurity in today’s data-driven world, where data consumption is on the rise. By equipping the public workforce with cybersecurity skills and fostering partnerships with the private sector, Zimbabwe is positioning itself as a regional leader in cybersecurity readiness. This proactive approach underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding its digital infrastructure and protecting citizens’ information in an increasingly interconnected world.
