NASA has successfully restored its Guam Remote Station, marking the completion of a recovery effort that lasted over three years following the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Mawar in 2023. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held on September 10 celebrated the return of the station’s central antenna to service, which was the final and most complex step in the rebuild process.
Significance of the Guam Remote Station
For nearly 30 years, the Guam Remote Station has played a crucial role in supporting NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS), which are essential for maintaining communication between spacecraft in low Earth orbit and ground control. The station helps close the “Zone of Exclusion,” a critical area where spacecraft can lose contact with Earth. Without this station, the International Space Station could experience communication blackouts lasting up to 20 minutes during each 90-minute orbit, posing significant risks for crewed missions.
Impact of Super Typhoon Mawar
On May 24, 2023, Super Typhoon Mawar, classified as a Category 4 storm, struck Guam with winds reaching 185 mph and over 28 inches of rain. The storm caused extensive damage, destroying two 16.5-meter antennas and damaging an 11-meter antenna along with the Inter Facility Link building at the station. This resulted in the reopening of the Zone of Exclusion for the first time since 1998, which reduced TDRS coverage to approximately 85% of a spacecraft’s orbit.
Recovery Efforts and Funding
In the immediate aftermath, NASA implemented emergency repairs to the least-damaged antenna and utilized two mobile terminals borrowed from the U.S. Army to restore partial service in time for a scheduled spacewalk in November 2023. In early 2025, Congress allocated disaster-relief funding to facilitate the complete rebuild of the ground station and to enhance the network’s resilience against future storms. Construction commenced in the summer of 2025 and was completed by summer 2026, allowing the central antenna to rejoin TDRS operations and effectively close the Zone of Exclusion once again.
Recognition and Future Operations
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, representatives from NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Division, along with local leaders and the station’s workforce, were present to acknowledge the efforts that led to the restoration. Jena Garrahy, Deputy Program Manager for Network Operations, emphasized the dedication and resilience of the team involved in the recovery, stating, “The return to service of the Guam Remote Station’s central antenna represents far more than the restoration of a critical piece of infrastructure — it is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and ingenuity of the people who made it possible.”
The Near Space Network, which includes the Guam Remote Station, is funded by SCaN and operated out of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The repairs were managed from NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.
