Cybersecurity can often feel overwhelming, especially with an influx of terms that sound more suited for the latest tech gadget than for real-world application. Phrases like “next-generation tools” and “paradigm shifts” can alienate those less familiar with the cyber landscape. For many, this world is an abstract concept, floating on the periphery of their daily lives.

Yet, the reality is that cybersecurity is deeply personal. It’s driven by the people involved—from the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) who faces mounting pressure in their role to the Security Operations Center (SOC) analysts who stand as the first line of defense. Attacks are executed by cybercriminals, but these incidents can directly affect individuals, as employees mistakenly click on phishing links or customers find their private data compromised.

Recently, some well-known brands, including Marks and Spencer, Co-op, and Adidas, have experienced significant cybersecurity breaches. Such events serve as stark reminders of the vulnerabilities organizations face today. In an environment where “when” rather than “if” an attack will occur becomes the focus, it’s encouraging to see more empathetic discussions surrounding these issues.

During a recent event, the Intelligent Technology Week Africa in Johannesburg, I witnessed firsthand the human side of cybersecurity. A roundtable discussion brought together experts from various sectors to tackle pressing issues surrounding digital transformation in Africa, particularly in terms of cybersecurity.

Participants highlighted the need to address key threats specific to the region and shared effective initiatives that are easing the burden on organizations.

Ben Leitch, the CXO Cyber Connections Manager, emphasized that while Africa is still advancing in technology, it’s crucial for businesses not to underestimate the threat of cybercrime. The financial toll of cybercrime in Africa reached approximately $10 billion in 2022, with projections indicating a continual rise.

According to Anathi Mtila, Cyber Defense Manager at MTN Group South Africa, the continent is battling daily ransomware attacks, compounded by a thriving dark web marketplace for sensitive corporate information. Alarmingly, computers and servers represent 65% of the targets for attacks in 2024, underlining the urgency for enhanced security measures across African companies.

Addressing the Skills Gap

One pressing issue in the cybersecurity landscape is the glaring skills gap. While this is a global challenge, Africa faces unique hurdles, including limited digital literacy that hampers training and skills development. To combat these threats, there is a need for coordinated efforts from governments and organizations to facilitate training opportunities.
