Brothers Arrested for $25 Million Ethereum Blockchain Scheme

Two MIT students, brothers Anton Peraire-Bueno, 24, and James Peraire-Bueno, 28, were arrested on Wednesday for orchestrating a sophisticated scheme to exploit the Ethereum blockchain and abscond with $25 million in cryptocurrency. This groundbreaking case marks the first instance of blockchain fraud in the US, according to federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

The duo, who studied computer science and math at MIT, allegedly used their expertise to manipulate pending transactions on the Ethereum blockchain, siphoning off $25 million from unsuspecting traders in just 12 seconds. US Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York emphasized the brothers’ calculated actions, stating, “They plotted for months and executed in seconds.”

The indictment against the brothers includes charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Anton was apprehended in Boston, while James was arrested in New York. Their legal representatives have yet to issue a statement on the matter.

Prosecutors revealed that the brothers exploited a vulnerability in the MEV-boost software, a tool widely used by Ethereum validators to validate new transactions. Following the theft, the siblings allegedly took elaborate measures to conceal their ill-gotten gains, including setting up shell companies and utilizing multiple private cryptocurrency addresses and foreign exchanges.
