Tesla Cybertrucks Gain Hands-Free Driving Feature in Latest Update

In a groundbreaking development, a select number of all-electric Tesla Cybertrucks now have the ability to drive on US highways hands-free, thanks to a recent update pushed by the automaker. Tesla AI head Ashok Elluswamy announced that Cybertrucks will be the first Tesla vehicles to receive the “end-to-end on highway” driving feature, utilizing a “neural net” to navigate all aspects of highway driving.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised his AI chief, calling it “nice work.” The feature, currently in “early access,” is only available to some Cybertruck owners who purchased the feature, with no confirmed timeline for a wider release. Tesla, known for its unconventional approach, did not provide a comment to WIRED’s inquiry.

Owners’ manuals remind users that the full-self-driving feature, known as “FSD (Supervised),” requires drivers to remain attentive to the road. Critics have raised concerns about driver misuse and the potential dangers of relying too heavily on autonomous driving features.

Despite initial challenges and delays in the Cybertruck’s production, this new feature signals a positive step forward for Tesla. As competitors enter the electric vehicle market, Musk sees autonomy as a key differentiator for Tesla’s success. The company’s upcoming unveiling of a self-driving taxi, dubbed the Cybercab, on October 10 further highlights their commitment to innovation in the autonomous driving space.
