The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is launching the DARPA Surgical Competition (DSC), a $3.5 million prize initiative aimed at advancing autonomous trauma surgical robotics. This competition is designed to address the critical shortage of available surgeons during large-scale combat operations, where traumatic injuries can become fatal due to a lack of medical personnel.
Competition Overview
The DSC will officially commence on September 22, 2026, with an Industry Day for potential participants, culminating in a Finals Competition Event in March 2027. The competition seeks to develop robotic systems that can serve as skilled partners to human surgeons, utilizing an “apprenticeship model” to assist during complex trauma procedures and eventually perform lifesaving surgical interventions independently.
Competition Structure and Prizes
Participants will undergo rigorous assessments through Component Gates that evaluate Medical Knowledge, Physical Capability, and Rapid Learning. Successful competitors will advance to two operational lanes:
- Surgical Collaboration Lane ($1.5M Prize Pool): This lane assesses the platforms’ ability to assist a lead surgeon in damage-control procedures safely and efficiently.
- Surgical Independence Lane ($1.5M Prize Pool): This lane evaluates the platforms’ capability to autonomously assess, plan, and execute trauma procedures without human intervention.
Additionally, there will be Component Gate Prizes totaling $500,000 for top performers in individual sub-component capabilities.
