Apple Employee Files Lawsuit Over Invasive Surveillance Practices

Apple Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Invasive Surveillance of Employees

In a groundbreaking legal move, Amar Bhakta, an employee in Apple’s advertising technology division, has filed a lawsuit against the tech giant, claiming it employs invasive surveillance tactics on workers’ personal devices. The lawsuit, lodged in California state court on Sunday, accuses Apple of monitoring employees’ private iCloud accounts and non-work-related devices without their consent.

Bhakta, who has been with Apple since 2020, alleges that the company’s policies infringe on employees’ privacy rights, allowing for “physical, video, and electronic surveillance” not only during work hours but also during off-duty time and after employment ends. The suit contends that these practices violate California’s stringent privacy laws.

Central to the allegations is Apple’s requirement that employees use Apple devices for work, which often leads them to utilize personal devices linked to their iCloud accounts. This integration, according to the lawsuit, grants Apple access to a wide array of personal data, including emails, photos, and even real-time location information. Bhakta’s legal team argues that Apple’s internal privacy policy permits such access, raising significant concerns about employee privacy.

In response, Apple has firmly denied the allegations, asserting that it respects employees’ privacy rights and encourages open discussions about workplace conditions. Bhakta is represented by experienced attorneys Chris Baker and Jahan Sagafi, who have a history of challenging large tech companies over employment practices.

The lawsuit, filed under California’s Private Attorneys General Act, could have far-reaching implications for employee privacy rights in the tech industry. As the case unfolds, it may set a precedent for how companies handle surveillance and personal privacy, particularly in an era where digital integration is increasingly common.
