New Monthly Barge Service Connects Port Canaveral and San Juan

Introduction to the Partnership

In an exciting development for logistics and trade, GT USA, a subsidiary of the Gulftainer Group, has teamed up with Great Lakes East LLC, part of The Great Lakes Towing Company. This newly formed partnership aims to establish a monthly barge service connecting Port Canaveral, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Service Details

The barge service will facilitate the monthly export of various construction materials from Canaveral Cargo Terminal (CCT). Key products include lumber, steel coils, sheet piles, rebar, and additional general cargo destined for San Juan. This new route enhances regional trade connections and highlights CCT’s commitment to diversifying its operations and expanding its service reach.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

By launching this service, GT USA and Great Lakes East are taking significant steps toward enhancing regional connectivity. It’s also a strategic alignment with CCT’s long-term vision to broaden its operational footprint across different geographies and ports. The terminal’s facilities are well-equipped to store the general cargo, demonstrating CCT’s capability to handle complex logistical requirements effectively.

Inaugural Voyage

The barge service officially launched with the inaugural trip of the Crimson Clover on July 14. This new venture represents a major milestone for both CCT and Great Lakes East. During its first operation, the barge received and loaded a range of commodities, which was executed in a highly efficient and secure manner. The launch event was marked by a presentation attended by Lynnard Woods, Operations Superintendent at CCT, who honored Sal Menoyo, VP of Special Projects at Great Lakes East, with a commemorative plaque celebrating the partnership.

Insights from Leadership

Luke Richards, Managing Director of Canaveral Cargo Terminal, highlighted the importance of this partnership in their growth strategy. He stated, “This partnership marks a significant milestone in our growth strategy. It reflects our commitment to innovation, responsiveness, and creating long-term value for our customers, partners, and the wider Florida community." Richards emphasized the importance of delivering excellent service, attributing this success to the dedication of the GT USA team.

Adding to this sentiment, Joe Starck, President of The Great Lakes Towing Company, expressed enthusiasm about the new breakbulk service. He mentioned that establishing this monthly service lays a strong foundation for long-term growth and enhances their ability to service the Puerto Rico trade lane with improved efficiency.

Aligning with Strategic Goals

This initiative is in direct alignment with Canaveral Cargo Terminal’s broader objectives. The aim is to solidify its status in the regional market while diversifying revenue streams and enhancing its infrastructure. These developments are designed to meet current and future cargo needs, reflecting an adaptive approach to the evolving logistics landscape.
