Merck Foundation CEO Dr. Rasha Kelej Strengthens Social Change Through ‘Fashion and Art with Purpose’ Community on World Art Day 2026

On World Art Day 2026, the Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, celebrates the six-year anniversary of its “Art and Fashion with Purpose” community. This initiative, founded by Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, aims to leverage art and fashion to address pressing health and social issues across Africa and beyond. The celebration underscores the foundation’s commitment to using creative expression as a vehicle for social change.

The Role of Art and Fashion in Social Awareness

Dr. Rasha Kelej, recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans from 2019 to 2025, emphasized the transformative potential of art and media in raising awareness about critical issues. She stated, “Art, fashion, and media are powerful tools for raising awareness and addressing critical social and health issues.” The community has focused on various themes, including breaking the stigma surrounding infertility, promoting girls’ education, and combating gender-based violence.

The initiative has attracted talented individuals from over 25 countries, fostering a collaborative environment that aims to create a meaningful cultural shift. The foundation’s approach highlights the importance of empowering artists to utilize their creative talents for advocacy and education.

Initiatives and Media Outreach

The Merck Foundation has launched several initiatives, including the pan-African television program “Our Africa by Merck Foundation.” This program, conceptualized and co-hosted by Dr. Kelej, showcases African fashion designers, musicians, and experts, aiming to spark dialogue on significant social issues. The program has gained substantial viewership across various African nations, further amplifying the community’s message.

“Our Africa” is broadcast on major television networks and is actively promoted through social media platforms. This multimedia strategy enhances the reach of the foundation’s initiatives, allowing for greater engagement with audiences across the continent.

Awards and Recognition

In collaboration with The First Ladies of Africa, the Merck Foundation annually presents eight significant awards aimed at recognizing talents in media, fashion, film, and music. These awards focus on two primary themes: breaking infertility stigma, supporting girls’ education, and promoting a healthy lifestyle through awareness of diabetes and hypertension.

Entries for the 2026 awards are currently being accepted, inviting young African talents to participate in this initiative that seeks to empower and uplift communities through creative expression.

Community Impact and Achievements

The “Art and Fashion with Purpose” community has recognized 175 exceptional talents from 25 countries through its Fashion, Film, and Song Awards. This diverse group includes 102 fashion award winners, 53 song award winners, and 20 film award winners, all selected for their creativity and impact. The winners have become integral members of the community, using their platforms to address sensitive social and health issues.

Additionally, the Merck Foundation has produced over 30 songs in collaboration with various African artists, addressing topics such as infertility stigma and women’s empowerment. These songs are available in multiple languages, including English, French, and local dialects, ensuring a wide reach and accessibility.

Educational Resources and Awareness Campaigns

The foundation has also launched nine children’s storybooks in five languages, along with six awareness animation films. These resources aim to educate communities about critical issues and foster a culture of awareness and change at grassroots levels.
