Pavel Durov Addresses Charges and Promises Changes for Telegram

Pavel Durov, the billionaire founder of Telegram, has broken his silence since his detention in France last month, vehemently denying allegations that the messaging app serves as a haven for cybercriminals. Durov, who was arrested in connection with crimes related to child sexual abuse images, drug trafficking, and fraudulent transactions on the platform, has also vowed to revamp Telegram’s moderation policies.

Despite being released on a hefty bail and ordered to report to authorities regularly, Durov has criticized the French authorities for targeting him personally instead of addressing their concerns with the company. He argues that holding a CEO accountable for crimes committed by third parties on the platform is an outdated approach.

In a statement posted on his Telegram channel, Durov acknowledged the challenges faced by the platform due to its rapid growth, which has attracted nearly 1 billion users. He emphasized that the vast majority of users are law-abiding citizens, but a small fraction engaging in illicit activities tarnish the platform’s reputation.

Despite the legal troubles, Durov defended Telegram’s commitment to user privacy and refusal to comply with demands from authoritarian governments. He pledged to enhance the platform’s moderation efforts, including removing features linked to illegal activities.

Durov expressed optimism that the recent events would ultimately strengthen Telegram and the social media industry as a whole. As the company works towards improving its processes for handling law enforcement requests and removing harmful content, Durov remains determined to uphold the platform’s principles and defend the rights of its users.
