Massive Corruption Scandal Unfolds in Madhya Pradesh: Former RTO Constable Accused of Looting Crores
An astonishing tale of alleged corruption has erupted in Madhya Pradesh, centering on former RTO constable Saurabh Sharma, who stands accused of amassing illicit assets valued between Rs 500 to 700 crore. Properties linked to Sharma include luxurious estates in Dubai, extensive fish farms, and a web of businesses believed to be conduits for his wealth.
The scandal ignited on December 19, 2024, when a vigilant former sarpanch in Mendori village reported suspicious activities surrounding a vehicle bearing the “RTO” plate. Authorities unearthed an alarming stash inside, including 52 kilograms of gold and Rs 10 crore in cash, purportedly belonging to Sharma’s aide, linking the constable directly to the bounty.
Following this initial discovery, the Lokayukta and Enforcement Directorate (ED) expanded their investigation into Sharma’s sprawling empire. Significant assets came to light, including a villa in Dubai valued at around Rs 150 crore and numerous fish farms across Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, Sharma’s construction firm, Aviral Building and Construction Pvt Ltd, is under scrutiny for acquiring properties valued at Rs 23 crore registered under family members’ names.
As the investigations deepen, political upheaval ensues. The opposition Congress party has accused the BJP-led government of shielding corrupt officials, escalating tensions as allegations fly. Congress leader Jitendra Patwari has claimed that a critical diary belonging to Sharma, which could implicate a broader corruption network, has mysteriously vanished. The BJP has pushed back, dismissing these claims as unfounded and reiterating its commitment to tackling corruption.
With Sharma now a fugitive after retiring in December 2023, the Lokayukta and ED are pursuing multiple charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, while raids across key cities continue to reveal further illicit assets. As this extraordinary scandal unfolds, the implications for Madhya Pradesh politics and governance remain profound, with turbulent times ahead for all parties involved.
