Navigating the AI Landscape in India: Insights from Lenovo’s CIO Playbook 2025

AI Adoption in India: A Measured Yet Promising Journey

India is witnessing a gradual yet significant rise in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as highlighted in Lenovo’s recent report, “CIO Playbook 2025: It’s Time for AI-nomics.” The study, based on a global IDC survey of over 2,900 respondents, reveals that while spending on AI is set to increase, organizational maturity and readiness vary widely across sectors.

By 2025, Generative AI is projected to account for 43% of India’s total AI expenditure, marking a pivotal shift in enterprise focus. Despite an anticipated 2.7-fold increase in AI investments, Indian organizations lag slightly behind the Asia Pacific average of 3.3 times. Notably, 49% of businesses are still in the evaluation or planning stages of AI implementation, primarily hindered by concerns over Return on Investment (ROI).

The report emphasizes that AI requires a long-term strategy, balancing experimental initiatives with measurable outcomes. Organizations face challenges such as data quality, talent shortages, and infrastructure limitations, which complicate the path to realizing the expected 3.6x ROI.

Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) has emerged as a top priority for CIOs, reflecting growing concerns about the ethical use of AI. However, only 19% of Indian CIOs report having fully enforced AI governance policies, underscoring the need for robust frameworks to address regulatory scrutiny and data privacy.

As AI applications evolve, Indian enterprises are leveraging AI primarily in sales, marketing, and software development, showcasing a customer-centric approach. While hybrid and on-premise infrastructures dominate AI workloads, the rise of AI-powered PCs is also noted, with over half of surveyed businesses planning to adopt these devices.

In conclusion, while India’s AI journey is gaining momentum, the focus must remain on building foundational capabilities—high-quality data, scalable infrastructure, and effective governance—to ensure sustainable growth and innovation in the AI landscape.
