NASA’s Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (SARSAT) technology played a crucial role in the rescue of five fishermen off the Gulf Coast of Mississippi during Memorial Day weekend 2024. The fishermen were participating in a fishing competition when their boat sank approximately 40 miles offshore. With no cell service available, one crew member activated a personal locator beacon (PLB), which sent a distress signal to the SARSAT system, enabling a swift rescue by the Coast Guard.
How SARSAT Technology Works
The SARSAT system, developed partly by NASA, has been operational since 1982 and became an international collaboration in 1985. It utilizes multiple satellites in Earth orbit to detect emergency signals from beacons like the PLB used by the fishermen. When a distress signal is received, it is directed to the nearest ground station, which then alerts rescue coordination centers to mobilize search and rescue crews.
Details of the Rescue
On that fateful day, the fishermen found themselves in the water just 30 seconds after their boat sank. They struggled to put on life jackets and retrieve coolers as they bobbed in the waves. Easton Barrett, the only crew member with a mobile phone, recorded a farewell message, hoping someone would find it. Fortunately, the activation of the PLB allowed for their location to be pinpointed, leading to a successful rescue by a Florida Coast Guard boat.
Impact of SARSAT Technology
The ResQLink PLB that saved Barrett and his crew is designed to notify emergency contacts when activated, ensuring that help is on the way. All emergency beacons must meet stringent requirements to function effectively when needed. The SARSAT system has saved over 63,000 lives since its inception, demonstrating its critical importance in search and rescue operations both on land and at sea.
As Barrett noted, “Ever since, I have tried to teach others about safety on the water and in the outdoors by using a PLB. If that will save one life, it’s worth the effort.” This incident underscores the significance of having reliable emergency communication devices in remote areas where traditional cell signals may not reach.
