Dubai’s Initiative to Tackle Abandoned Vehicles

A Successful Sustainable Effort

In an effort to enhance the aesthetic charm and safety of the city, Dubai Municipality reports significant progress in addressing abandoned vehicles and equipment during the first half of 2025. A total of 1,387 abandoned vehicles were removed from various locations throughout the emirate, alongside the issuance of 6,187 warnings regarding such vehicles across residential, commercial, and industrial regions. This initiative is part of ongoing campaigns aimed at maintaining urban cleanliness and protecting public health.

Reaffirming Commitment to Urban Maintenance

Eng. Saeed Abdul Rahim Safar, who serves as the Director of the Waste Operations Department at Dubai Municipality, stated, “Tackling abandoned vehicles is integral to maintaining the urban environment of Dubai and enhancing its attractiveness.” The Municipality’s field teams are consistently engaged in monitoring and removing these vehicles, regardless of their location—whether on roadways, in public parking areas, or on empty plots of land. During the first half of this year, a commendable 77.6% public response rate was recorded in resolving abandoned vehicle cases.

Raising Community Awareness

Highlighting the significance of these efforts, Safar noted that community awareness campaigns are essential. These programs aim to educate residents about the drawbacks posed by abandoned vehicles and the collective responsibility to maintain the city’s appearance. The Municipality is committed to working collaboratively with both government bodies and private sector partners to cultivate a sense of community responsibility for urban cleanliness.

Understanding the Removal Process

Efficiently managing abandoned vehicles involves a structured removal process. Initially, field teams utilize a smart system to log details of the identified vehicles. Following this, a warning notice is issued, allowing vehicle owners a timeframe of 3 to 15 days to respond, contingent on the vehicle’s condition and location. For those vehicles registered in Dubai, an alert is also sent via SMS through the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) system.

Once the warning period has lapsed without action from the owners, the vehicles are removed in coordination with Emirates Parking and relocated to an impound yard located in Al Awir. This systematic approach ensures minimal disruption to the city’s infrastructure and contributes to maintaining public order.

Encouraging Responsible Behavior

Dubai Municipality urges residents to be proactive in preventing their vehicles from becoming abandoned. The Municipality points out that this is particularly crucial during the summer holidays when cars may be left unattended for extended periods. Residents play a vital role in preserving the city’s cleanliness by maintaining their vehicles, employing protective covers, and parking in designated areas rather than in isolated or sandy locations that may hasten deterioration.

A Call for Collaboration

The message is clear: the responsibility for keeping Dubai pristine lies not just with the government, but also with each member of the community. By working together, residents can help ensure that the city remains an attractive and safe place for everyone.
